Chicken Lettuce wraps on a plate with sauce

P.F. Chang’s chicken lettuce wraps are probably one of the most popular dishes there and for good reason! They have a delicious Asian-flavored chicken filling served alongside lettuce leaves and crispy rice noodles to fill to your desire. They’re slightly sweet, filled with great texture from the crunchy water chestnuts, and full of protein and veggies. When my family goes, we order them as an appetizer to share with the whole group, or sometimes I order it as a low-carb main entrée for myself.

Like many of my copycat recipes, they’re inspired from my early years of marriage when Tim and I would go out to eat A LOT. Over time, I’ve made a decent amount of copycat recipes from our favorite restaurants, and I’ll be honest — I think my homemade versions taste just as good (if not better!), plus they’re the fraction of the cost! Don’t believe me? Come taste and see! With the boys now teenagers, high protein, veggie-filled meals are a must, and these wraps certainly deliver. We all love the flavor (and the slight sweetness) of the wraps and how they make us feel full, yet not overloaded.

Want more wraps? I love wraps because of how great they are for an on-the-go lunch. This beef lettuce wrap recipe, flank steak wraps, and chicken ranch wraps are some of my favorites.

How to Make PF Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Takeout takes on average 25-60 minutes to arrive at your house — but these lettuce wraps take only 25 minutes to make at home! Your wallet will thank you once you taste and see how much more delicious this copycat PF Chang’s lettuce wraps recipe is!

  • Cook the chicken mixture: Heat a large skillet with oil over medium-high heat. Cook and crumble the ground chicken. Add the diced onions and cook until they are soft and translucent.
  • Make the sauce: Mix up the sauce ingredients (hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar) in a small bowl. Pour over the chicken and add the fresh ginger. Cook for two minutes until fragrant.
  • Finish the filling and serve: Stir in the water chestnuts and green onions to the chicken filling. Cook for two more minutes and season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the meat mixture into the lettuce leaves and enjoy.

Popular substitutions: Feel free to switch the ground chicken with ground beef, pork, or turkey. Instead of butter lettuce, romaine or iceberg lettuce work too!

Chicken Lettuce Wrap Tips & Tricks

I really think wraps are one of the easiest things to cook, which means mistakes are hard to make. Here are a couple tips that I’ve learned over time that may help you make the process just a smidge easier for you.

  • Avoid overstuffing: Just like with any wraps, avoid overstuffing your lettuce leaves with the filling. Some leaves may be able to handle more filling than others, so eyeball it yourself.
  • Feel free to remove water chestnuts (optional): Water chestnuts are not one of those ingredients that are frequently stored in everyone’s pantry. In case you don’t have any, don’t fret — these wraps still taste great without them (they just won’t have that signature crunch!).
  • Add a few more ingredients (optional): P.F. Changs chicken wraps also have shiitake mushrooms, garlic, and carrots. If you want to add these, feel free! Just sauté them to soften first! Same goes for the crispy rice noodles. For extra heat, a drizzle of sriracha goes a long way.
  • Serve with a sauce: If you feel like you need more sauce to your wraps, feel free to either make a little extra of the same sauce that goes into the meat mixture, my 5-minute peanut sauce, or simply serve with a little bit of soy sauce.

Make-Ahead & Storing PF Chang’s Lettuce Wraps

As a mom with a full time job and two teen boys with full-time school and activities themselves, I really like to meal prep and make large portions of meals that can be stored and enjoyed again later for lunch the next day or two. It makes mom life so much easier!

  • Make ahead: The filling stores really well, making these wraps great for make-ahead lunches. Make the filling up to five days ahead of time!
  • Refrigerator: Store the filling separately from the lettuce for up to five days in the fridge in an airtight container.
  • Reheating: Reheat the filling in the microwave (for a quick individual serving), or in the skillet (for larger amounts).

Hot tip: If you have tons of filling left over, serve it over a simple garden salad if you don’t feel like eating wraps.
