How To Make a Cobb Salad

This Cobb salad takes only 15 minutes to whip up — can I hear an “amen” from my busy readers? Grab a serving bowl and a few ingredients, then start the timer!

  • Arrange the salad ingredients: Add the lettuce to a large bowl, then arrange the tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, bacon, chicken, blue cheese, and avocado(optional) on top.
  • Make the dressing: Add all the dressing ingredients to a small jar and whisk or shake until it is smooth.
  • Toss the salad: Pour the dressing over the salad, toss, and enjoy!

Ingredient Variations

My kids are picky about certain ingredients, so I always keep different tastes in mind when creating recipes. Make any of these changes for a Cobb salad that keeps all your picky eaters happy!

  • Protein: Not feeling chicken?Swap it for roast turkey, shrimp, or salmon.
  • Veggies: Our family loves good ol’ romaine lettuce, but iceberg lettuce, arugula, and spring greens are great too. For more veggie power, add sliced red onions, cucumbers, green onions, chives, or corn.
  • Dressing: A classic Cobb salad is tossed with a red wine vinaigrette, but feel free to use your favorite dressing instead. Ranch dressing, green goddess dressing, and Italian dressing are all delicious options!
  • Cheese: Do you want to get fancy? Try Roquefort — it’s a sheep’s milk blue cheese with a salty and tangy flavor. If you’re not the biggest fan of blue cheese, opt for cheddar, feta, Colby jack, Parmesan, or Gouda.

Tips For the Best Cobb Salad

I know you all have been waiting for this recipe, and I promise it was worth the wait. I learned a few valuable lessons along the way, so it’s only fair to pass the knowledge along — no gate-keeping here!

  • Prep the eggs, bacon, and chicken in advance. These are the ingredients that take the most time to prep, so get them out of the way first. Here’s a little hack for you — pull out your air fryer and cook the eggs, chicken breast, and bacon in one go.
  • Use quality ingredients. Salads rely on fresh ingredients to deliver the best taste, so pick ripe veggies and a high quality blue cheese. Don’t skip the homemade dressing!
  • Spin the lettuce. Nobody likes a soggy salad — invest in a salad spinner for crisp greens every time.

Ways To Serve

Our Cobb salad is ideal for meal prepping, hosting, and everything in between. With all the protein, it’s honestly an entire meal! Serve it with homemade bread and a cup of tomato basil soup for a classic soup-and-salad combo. Or, dish the Cobb up as a side salad to accompany shish kabobs, braised cabbage and rice, or penne alla vodka.

Make Ahead & Storage

This chicken Cobb salad recipe is my go-to for many reasons, but storage is a huge factor. Cobb salad holds up incredibly well and tastes just as delicious the next day!

  • Make ahead: Assemble the salad and make the dressing 2-3 hours ahead of time. Store them separately in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve, then toss.
  • Storage: To store for up to three days, store the salad in an airtight container in the fridge.

Hot tip: To avoid sogginess, hold off on dressing the salad until you’re ready to enjoy it.
