This tasty baked halibut recipe always comes out tender, flakey, and luxurious. Eat it on its own, in tacos, sandwiches, or in salads — it’s a crowd favorite!

Move over cod and tilapia, there’s a new fish in town! Just kidding — I love my tilapia and cod, but halibut has the #1 place in my heart as my all time favorite white fish. I like to call it a “bougie” fish because it tastes so luxurious, especially when prepared as baked halibut in this recipe. It may be a tad expensive, but it’s a delicious and worthy investment if you ask me!
If you’re looking for a quick and crazy easy, four-ingredient, 20-minute protein, this recipe for oven baked halibut has your name on it. It’s super flakey, always moist, and perfect for “wow-ing” a crowd.

How to Cook Halibut in the Oven
Who said luxurious food has to be complicated? It definitely wasn’t me! Preparing this simple baked halibut recipe requires only four ingredients and a quick bake in the oven. As I say, it’s “crazy easy!”
- Prepare the fish: First, slice the halibut filet into equal-sized pieces and spread them out on a prepared baking sheet. Preheat the oven.
- Season: Next, drizzle the fish with lemon juice and season it with garlic parsley salt. Top each filet with the slices of butter.
- Bake: Bake the fish at 425°F or at a low broil for about 10-15 minutes.
Hot tip: If you have frozen halibut, make sure it’s fully thawed before baking. For best results, thaw it in the fridge for a couple of hours and up to overnight.

A Few Tips for the Tastiest Baked Halibut
I don’t believe in secrets when it comes to this fish. It is a pricier fish than most other white varieties, so I believe you should make the best of your money’s worth. Here are a few foolproof tips to ensure you get the most tender, juiciest halibut possible.
- Slice the halibut into similar pieces: To cook evenly, slice the halibut into similar sized pieces and try to use fillets that are a similar thickness.
- Bake the fish uncovered: Bake the halibut uncovered for the best results. If you bake it covered, it will create a steaming effect and prevent the top of the fish from crisping up.
- Use a meat thermometer: Unsure if your fish is finished? Remove all the guesswork by using an instant-read meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature just reaches 145°F. Halibut is done at 145°F, when the flesh flakes easily with a fork, and the meat is opaque in color.
- Don’t overbake the halibut: Avoid overbaking the halibut, as it can dry out and turn rubbery (like all overcooked fish).
- Tweak the seasoning: Halibut is super versatile, so feel free to tweak the seasoning as you like. Add some freshly cracked black pepper, Parmesan cheese, smoked paprika, lemon zest, or whatever other seasoning you’re craving. You can also top the baked fillets with fresh dill or basil!
Hot tip: Halibut isn’t always the easiest fish to find. I often get mine at Whole Foods or at Costco when it’s in season.
How to Serve Baked Halibut
When it comes to halibut, we love to serve it as an entrée alongside asparagus dishes. Some of our favorites are air fryer asparagus, asparagus casserole, and asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. If you don’t like asparagus, any broccoli or cauliflower side dish will do the trick. On the flip side, feel free to use the baked halibut in fish tacos, as a simple sandwich with a slice of bread, or as a topping in a garden salad.

Storing & Reheating Baked Halibut
Whenever I make halibut, I rarely have leftovers. Between Tim, the two boys, and myself, we devour these delicious fillets like none other. In case you have a little more “self-control” (congratulations!) than us, here are my tips on how to store and reheat the halibut again for later.
- Refrigerator: Keep your baked halibut fresh for 3-4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Reheating: To reheat the halibut without drying it out, pop it in a baking dish and cover it with aluminum foil. Bake it at 350°F until warmed through.
