No air fryer? No problem! If you don’t own an air fryer, that’s ok! Use your oven to make crispy roasted cabbage steaks. Or shred the raw cabbage to use in cabbage soup.

How To Air Fry Cabbage Steaks

Five minutes of prep, a few simple ingredients, and an air fryer are all you need for this air fryer cabbage recipe.

  • Prep the air fryer: Pour the water into the bottom of the air fryer basket (under the tray/basket). Preheat the fryer to 400°F and wait 3-5 minutes before adding the cabbage.
  • Season the cabbage: Remove the loose outer leaves of the cabbage, then slice the head into 8 uniform steaks. Place the steaks on a cutting board, then brush both sides with olive oil and sprinkle the seasonings on top.
  • Cook the cabbage steaks: Place the steaks on the air fryer tray without overcrowding them. Cook in batches if needed. Air fry the steaks for 8-12 minutes, or until they are cooked to your desired texture. Serve warm.

Hot tip: If you notice the sides of the cabbage steaks coming apart as they air fry — that’s totally okay and normal. This does not affect the taste at all!

Air Fryer Cabbage Steak Tips

Are you looking for all the help you can get to ensure your cabbage steaks taste great? Check out these tips and you’ll be all set.

  • Pick your color of cabbage: The two most popular types of cabbage are red and green cabbage. Either one works well in this recipe — the main difference is the color!
  • Adjust the seasoning: If you prefer less spice, use 1/2 tablespoon or less of the Old Bay seasoning, or make it simple with only salt and black pepper. Optionally, make it your own with a variety of other spices including garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, etc.
  • Add toppings (optional): For a salty “topping”, add shredded Parmesan cheese on top of the steaks a few minutes before the steaks are done. For more protein, add cooked chopped bacon right before serving.
  • Avoid overcrowding: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer tray, as this affects the function of the fryer and the textures of the air fried vegetable. Instead, cook the steaks in batches.
  • Flip the steaks once: The only time the steaks need to be flipped is when seasoning so both sides are equally seasoned. There’s no need to flip them in the air fryer since the air circulates.
  • Remember the water: Remember to pour a little bit of water under the basket! The steam helps to cook the cabbage.

Serving Air Fryer Cabbage Steak

Whenever you’re looking for a veggie side dish for dinner, serve these tender cabbage steaks. They’re especially tasty along with marry me chicken, crock pot pork chops, braised beef with mushrooms, or any other saucy protein dish. Add more veggies to the table with roasted carrots and parsnips or air fryer broccoli. If you’re craving a soup, serve the steak with creamy potato soup.

Storing & Reheating Cabbage Steaks

Leftover cabbage steaks last for up to two days in an airtight container in the fridge. Since they taste best warm and crispy, reheat the leftovers in the air fryer at 360°F for a few minutes or quickly in the microwave. If you like the steaks cold, use them to make this salad.
